Crowd control barriers can be made from a variety of materials including rope, vinyl, plastic and steel. Steel is the most often used due to its strength and interlocking capabilities. When a barricade is interlocked it presents an impenetrable line that is difficult to cross or be knocked down. When a barricade is not interlocked individuals can easily lift sections out of place and slip through and severely compromise the barrier. A classic modern barrier has hooks attached that lock together every 15 to 25 inches.

They were used when the Beatles came to the United States in 1964 to control excited crowds of fans. The Olympic Games have used interlocking steel barriers to control crowds since the early 1980’s.

The Standards For Crowd Control Barriers

Fabricators of crowd control barriers have used unofficial standards in the manufacturing process since the 1990’s. The international standards are 1, 2 and 2.5 meters in length with a height of 43 inches. This provides a high degree of visibility and safety. An eight foot long barricade has an average weight of 55 pounds. A standard barricade is made from sixteen gauge steel tubing and is designed to be rust proof so it can be stored outside. Replacement bases are available in fours sizes which are wheel bases, U bases, bridge bases and flat bases. Each base serves a differentpurpose.
